RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
I didn't get them last time. I was just getting into their music at that time, unfortunately for me I didn't know they were in Portland.
I'm going to get floor tix with a few friends of mine. Are you? If so we should all meet before hand. "Just a little tale from the streets of America..." |

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
pretty much all of us here.
We basically got them added to the playlist at the old station by ourselves, a good year and a half before Twilight even came out, I think even before Knights of Cydonia was put on Guitar Hero III, which is when most people became aware of them. And even then, that was like 2 years after Cort had seen them live at Bumbershoot, I believe. Somethin like that. Anyway, if you haven't listened to Absolution, their 2001 album, you're missing out. One of the best rock albums of the decade, easy. |

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
True Story: Stockholm Syndrome came about because Bellamy heard "Sugar" by System of a Down and said "I want something that sounds sorta like that."
He didn't really ACHIEVE that, but what he did make is pretty fuckin badass. |

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
I know there's a better-than-average chance that I'll be shouted out of the forum for this one, but why oh why would he want to emulate System of a Down? Not so much for the music, I guess, but listening to Serj makes my hands detach from my body Thing-like, scamper to the cutlery drawer, grab a knife, march back to where I am, and attempt to stab my ears out in rapid succession.
Back on topic, enjoy Muse. Their live shows are fucking awesome. I am jealous. |

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
I don't know why you'd be shouted down - It's a good question. the story blows my mind because I don't imagine Matt Bellamy listening to System very much at all. I couldn't handle them for longer than maybe 4 minutes before I'd need to put something else on. I like a couple of their songs, but they're a singles band, for me. Not an album band.

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
System of a Down is one of those bands where I like the songs until the lead singer starts... well... singing. Coheed and Cambria are the same boat.
Back to Muse: On their last visit they had a huge screen showing bizzare CG videos as they performed. When they played Stockholm Syndrome it showed a fighter pilot with the space ship from "Galaga" being reflected in his flight helmets visor. It looked pretty awesome. RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
The reason why he'd want to sound like System is that they are a solid and fairly unique sounding band. Listen to an album and see how many songs are in 4-4. Pretty much none. And they go pretty balls-out. System was one of the few bands to come from the early 00's that didn't irritate the shit out of me.
Muse's opener is Silversun Pickups which makes me want to see this show even more. |

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
God, you guys are so lucky. I would love to catch Muse live.
I first became aware of them when my best friend played me Stockholm Syndrome around 2003. I had a massive auralgasm, lost consciousness for 30 minutes, and then made him drive me to the store to get a copy of Absolution for myself. Been a fan ever since. BTW, they have a couple of videos/live performances up at HULU. High quality, plus it's always interesting to see how crazy they go with their live arrangements. |

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
Rarely go to shows at the Rose Garden anymore, or I guess at any really large venue. Online ticket sales really ruined it...was the day if you were super hardcore you could camp out at a ticket location that's whatever could be the optimal balance of middle of nowhere for less competition and still close enough in to have some reasonably decent seats.
And I don't think the RG will ever have a completely GA show...maybe too big. The MC is at least small enough that you can think about having a full on GA show. And nobody plays the armory anymore (well, except alice in chains, recently...) which I always thought was a great compromise with size and viewability... I'd forgotten just how well you can see from anywhere in that place, no matter how back of the room you ended up sitting. Seeing chains in there was fucking incredible...they were even better than the last two times (rockfest @ col meadows!/roseland), the sound was great, and you can see *everything*. Lots of people hate it but I love the armory. And this was full fucking circle...because the last time anyone in Oregon saw Layne Staley play while he was alive was at the Dirt tour, at the armory. Lots of catharsis running around that night, boy howdy. And creature with the atom brain (unlisted opener) is pretty fucking kickass too, or at least their drummer. surprised I remain, oh wait...this was about muse? yeah, I'd heard their music quite a while before the movie, I just didn't know it was them. Happens more often than you might think... |

RE: MUSE IN PORTLAND
I wish I was. I'm not much of a utuber...so I don't even know what they look like. And I rarely listen to music...even though I am hella gifted at it (among things) and love it to death.
But if it were at a smaller venue *and* I was able to get to it, hell yes I would go. Man, I've had tix to Hank 3 and Assjack for weeks. Shit if I was going there would be a fucking party to starty. I can't believe I just spewed that phrase... But yeah, no way to do a big arena show that to get down and loud beforehand to juice the mood. A lot of times we barbeque very loudly...haven't really tailgated at the RG before, so I don't know how friendly it is, but since we're at smaller venues mostly I think you need permits to do that out in the street where we usually end up parking. So to give you the benefit of my advice, quite frequently many establishments will let you reserve a room or a few tables for cost of snax/drinx, even if they don't advertise that they do. There. You're welcome. Now all you have to do is make a couple calls to get the mixer started and you're out nada if people punk off. But if they show, you're a fucking hero. You can even do shit like negotiate, no problem. For example, if you bring up that if 10 people come and each buys a couple drinks and food, that's like 30 bucks each and 300 bucks for probably around an hour of patronage...and it goes up from there...can say, well, if we do over $X business here can we get a X% break, and always make clear that the gratuity is calculated BEFORE discounts, or you can get the break and guarantee 10% break perhaps...the argument is that if you can offer some people a bonus for showing up that you might be able to cram more people into that little window of time who are spending more money, etc, etc. That's just one of many angles...you would be amazed at how flexible most places are once you get hold of a savvy manager. The thing you don't do is argue with them if they don't see the value, because even if you convince them they're probably still thinking they're getting a raw deal and will find a way to fuck with you. But really, you are doing someone a big fat favor by increasing the odds that they'll have a nice group of well-behaved people coming in who are intending on spending a reasonable amount and actually were considerate enough to CALL IN ADVANCE instead of just walking in and spiking the workload of whoever misfortunately happened to be on staff with no guarantees of gratuity or thanks or anything of course... It is AMAZING how much mileage you can get out of spending 15 minutes on a couple phone calls. Oh and always have a backup plan. Make sure your backup plan knows they're a backup plan and just what the odds are they're going to be employed. The places you'd want to be at anyhow appreciate that sort of thing too and if they're good enough they can field calls like that with no sweat on wondering how to manage it. Just think if you thought you could get 10-30 people together. You could throw a place like 1500 in business if people have 2-3 drinks, snax, and dessert or something. If it's a place you're a regular at, it will help keep them in business. There is one place on fremont where they flattened rose's ice cream shop and put in an ugly ass thing that looks like a bunch of 8th graders built a huge plywood fort with art in the front that looks like a junkyard simultaneously shit itself while vomiting (art is great if it invokes emotion, I guess, but *everyone* just thinks it's ugly and stupid there is nothing redeeming about the bicycle plane head with rebar)...it's been 3 different businesses now, and a few other somewhat newer storefronts have also been through several/multiple iterations.../digression Someday I will be in business for myself and it will be fucking GLORIOUS for me and my customers. And the fucking live wire last night had an ACOUSTIC session with FLOATER, upon further investigation. I would have gone had not fam showed up...with HUGS and TREATS FROM THE BEACH! oh and if you want to get it on before assjack, sorry we're already doing a place in old town that is sort of not for everyone. This is one of those shows I'm going to with a couple friends, all dudes...so, you can prolly guess. bow-chicka-wah-wowwww, |
